This presentation will be an overview of the main considerations from the viewpoint of current best practice. An English law perspective will underlie the discussion, but the principles are generally universally applicable. Sourcing from multiple partners has been standard practice in many industries, but not in IT services until recently. Although academics started documenting individual cases from the mid-nineties it has not been until the past year that significant deals have been struck where a client has employed a basket of suppliers rather than a single supplier. This presentation and discussion will explore the advantages of multisourcing, along with the pitfalls of trying to manage additional complexity. Mark Kobayashi-Hillary has a strong background in managing financial services technology, with experience at Tokai, SocGen, and Sanford Bernstein mainly focused on the development of equity trading platforms. His on-the-ground experience of offshoring led to his book 'Outsourcing to India: The Offshore Advantage' (Springer) in 2004. Soon after this book was published he moved out of the City to head technology research for the Commonwealth Business Council, focused on outsourcing across the 53-nation Commonwealth region. In 2005 he contributed to the book 'Technology and Offshore Outsourcing Strategies' (Palgrave) and he is presently working on further books about outsourcing, including 'The Level Playing Field' (BCS) with Dr Richard Sykes and 'Building a Future with BRICs' (Springer). Mark is a board member of the National Outsourcing Association. He is a founding member of the British Computer Society working party on Offshoring.
